Week 2 served up everything we love about grassroots hockey: local derbies, clean sheets, brand-new kit, and plenty of classic weekend drama.
The Ladies 1s took the spotlight away at Droitwich Spa 1s, debuting their sharp new away shirts, again sponsored by Penns, with a fantastic 2–0 win. Jo Cook opened the scoring midway through the first half, carrying into the D and drilling home a class finish straight off Wednesday's training ground. Player of the Match Claire Humphries was immense, dominating throughout to secure two wins from two and back-to-back clean sheets.
Back home, the Ladies 2s Development fixture embodied what grassroots sports are all about. When Bromsgrove 5s arrived with just six players, several Redditch players selflessly swapped shirts to make it a proper 9-a-side contest, with Redditch playing without a keeper. Bromsgrove came away with the win, largely thanks to the lethal upfront pairing of Louise and Ella—who just so happen to be Redditch players🤦♂️😅
The Men’s 1s fought out a tense, hard-fought 0–0 stalemate with local rivals Droitwich 1s, sharing the points in a tactical battle.
The Men’s 2s had a tough afternoon against a rampant Harborne 5s side fresh off an 11–0 opening weekend win. While the 0–6 scoreline favoured the visitors, it didn't tell the full story; Redditch battled tirelessly from pushback to the final whistle, creating promising attacking spells that will serve this young squad well.
(The Men’s 3s unfortunately had to concede a walkover away at Nuneaton 2s due to availability).
Rounding off the day, our Badgers provided an eight-goal thriller away at Droitwich Badgers! Redditch flew out of the blocks with crisp passing to build a 4–0 half-time lead before Droitwich rallied for a 4–4 draw. Played in true developement spirit with rotating positions, shared players, and another debutant in their very first match, everyone left everything on the pitch. Coach Lee managed to hit his 10,000 step target just pacing the sideline, which is possibly more than he does when actually playing 😂😂
A massive thank you to our umpires, drivers, supporters, and our sponsors for another memorable weekend. We go again next Saturday! 🏑
