Redditch Hockey Club players thrilled to be back on the pitch
NEWLY-PROMOTED Redditch returned to action on Saturday for their first match after nearly seven months off.
The Kingfishers were beaten 2-0 in a hard-fought contest by Old Halesonians – a division above Redditch – but there was very little between the two sides, particularly in a goalless first half, and in the end fitness told as the game became more open in the latter stages.
A second goal on the break – fired through the legs of the Redditch keeper – put the outcome beyond doubt but there was lots of encouragement for Redditch who this weekend play in a triangular tournament at home against Bournville and Pershore first teams.
Redditch 3rds started their pre-season with a 6-3 win over Kingswinford 2nds.
There was plenty of positive play and good performances throughout, especially from the youngsters who made the step up from the 4ths.
Goalscorers were Josh Checkley (3), Jack Gwyer (2) and Ben McFarland. Redditch 3rds host Olton & West Warwickshire 5ths on Saturday at 4.30pm.
